| NEW ZEALAND: THE “CHALON” ISSUES 1855 – 1873 | |
| | _ | The launch of this major new work on the Chalon issues is planned for Saturday 19 November 2005 at the New Zealand 2005 Exhibition. The book is presently being written by Gerald Ellott RDP, Bob Odenweller RDP, John Watts and Tom Lee with a major portion on the various Roulette issues being contributed by the Right Honourable R J Tizard.
Much new research has established answers to some of the thorny old questions related to these issues, the first day of issue, what type of printing machine was used by Richardson? Who supplied the perforating equipment? Which printer produced which overlaps? All of these plus a number of other questions are all reviewed in the light of information now available thanks to the advent of the internet and its ability to allow discussion in real time. (Overseas collectors may well fail to realise how cut off New Zealand was in terms of both International mail deliveries and all telephone costs until very recent times).
These communication problems created a situation in which the tendency of earlier New Zealand philatelists was to work with what was available, and given the loss of Post Office records to fire and shipwreck over the years, what was available was mainly original philatelic and postal history material plus a great deal of theory and speculative conclusions. Mistakes were almost inevitable and these have led to major discussions and disagreements over the years. The new book will not answer all, or even most, of the questions related to these stamps, indeed it may well be that many of the questions can never be answered, but with the unlimited assistance of the Museum of New Zealand, Canterbury Museum and New Zealand Post plus unlimited access to the collections and knowledge of philatelists such as John Woolfe of England, Joseph Hackmey of Israel and of the authors, it is certain that the many of the problems looked at will be rewritten with, (dare one say it?), satisfactory conclusions being drawn.
The book itself will be hard backed, approximately 450 pages on quality art paper, in full colour with gold-edged leaves and printed by the company which produced the recent superb publication The Stamps and Postal History of Nineteenth Century Samoa by Bob Odenweller. The anticipated cost will be in the region of NZ$100.00, a “bargain” price made possible only by the generosity of the Zeapex Trust Inc. who have contributed major amounts to both the printing costs and to expenses.
Pre-order forms for this publication will be included in the next Exhibition Bulletin, and with the current level of interest, we would advise you to order a copy ASAP to avoid disappointment.
The book will be launched at the North Shore Philatelic Society Breakfast at the Exhibition.
