NORTH SHORE CITY is New Zealand's 4th largest city, located just 5 minutes by motorway from Downtown Auckland. Here can be found beautiful unspoilt beaches, native bush and magnificent sea views, just a short stroll from the tree-lined streets of the centre of Shore life - Takapuna.
Lake Road links you to Devonport, the home of the New Zealand Navy and the ferry connection to Auckland City. Here, two extinct volcanoes offer a view of the Waitemata Harbour and surrounding suburbs of the City and the impressive sight of Rangitoto Island - another volcano and the last one to erupt in the Auckland area about 650 years ago. Devonport has plenty of specialist shops, boutiques, cafés and three museums - something to interest everyone. The Esplanade Hotel opposite the ferry building is the centre of this, the oldest borough in the Auckland area, with many Victorian villas to be seen.
Of similar historic interest are the Birkenhead and Northcote areas, with bush walks and shopping areas. The Parkland setting of the Chelsea Sugar Refinery is well worth a visit.
Going north, you come to Glenfield, where the new Westfield Shopping Town has New Zealand's largest foodcourt and over 110 specialty stores.
|
North again brings you to the Albany basin - one of the fastest growing areas on the Shore - with major stores, the North Harbour Stadium and the all-new Massey University nearby. Long Bay reserve boasts the best unspoilt beach on the coast and going south, the golden sands and bays take you right down to Takapuna and Devonport.
In the centre of all this wonderful scenery and close to the northern motorway from Auckland is the venue for the New Zealand 2005 Exhibition - the North Shore Events Centre.
