A PHILATELIC PROFILE OF KEITH GRIFFITHS – FEDERATION CO-ORDINATOR & MEMBER OF THE JURY

Keith A Griffiths and family arrived at Wellington, New Zealand from Bognor Regis, Sussex, England, January 1965.

He moved to Auckland in 1967, joined Auckland Philatelic Society and since then he has held every office in the society other than Treasurer and currently is the society’s Patron.

In 1969 he attended “Tarapex 69” and realized that exhibiting was the art of displaying philately; from the 1970s to the 1990s he introduced exhibiting to the Auckland Society, led many and varied programmes encouraging new and older stamp collectors to display their material, which led to the development of some Auckland members’ award winning collections, both nationally and internationally.

He has been a National judge since 1980 and International judge since 1987, and was recently the first New Zealander chosen to be a member of an International Exhibition expert committee.

Membership of the Air Mail Society of New Zealand since 1969, Christchurch P.S. since 1974; Postal History Society of New Zealand since 1974 and once again held most positions, presently Vice President and Publications Officer.

He has represented the Northern Region at New Zealand Philatelic Federation level since 1980, serving three years as President, has been the Federation’s Commissioner to 11 overseas exhibitions.

Invited to judge at 10 overseas exhibitions. Nationally he has been involved in the management of the following major exhibitions ZEAPEX’80 Secretary, Hall Manager; NEW ZEALAND 1990 Committee, Hall Manager; POSTEX ’95 Chairman of Exhibition Committee.

  • New Zealand Philatelic Federation “Award of Honour”, 1991
  • Australian Air Mail Society “The Ross Smith” Silver Medal, 1988
  • American Air Mail Society Gold Medal,1998
  • Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society of NZ, 2000
  • American Air Mail Society elected to Aerophilatelic Hall of Fame, 2003
